What does it mean to love a country when it disappoints us? In this three-part online series, Deborah Barer and Tamara Mann Tweel will explore the complex relationship between despair and patriotism, loyalty and critique, and love and disappointment. Drawing on sources ranging from rabbinic literature to canonical American texts and short stories, we will reckon with how to re-form national attachments after moments of lost faith or rupture. Together, we will consider how individuals and communities remain connected to a country whose actions fall short of their ideals. Bringing Jewish and American voices into conversation, we will explore how our religious and national traditions can help us better think about patriotism, disappointment, and civic responsibility at this moment in American Jewish life.
The sessions form a series, but participants may attend individual classes even if they cannot attend all three.
