Job Description: Madrich/a (facilitator) 

 

The Shalom Hartman Institute's Teen Fellowship is an extraordinary academic and leadership development opportunity for Jewish high school students (entering grades 10-12) from across North America to cultivate their Jewish identities and commitments to Jewish peoplehood. Hartman Teen Fellows study with the Institute’s preeminent faculty to grapple with pressing questions related to Jewish identity and belonging, their relationship to the State of Israel, and important issues facing the Jewish people. In a community of Jewish peers, Fellows cultivate a drive and capacity to lead meaningful Jewish lives and the tools to build an informed and meaningful Jewish future. 

Our team of Madrichim (facilitators) support the program by modeling a commitment to an active Jewish living along with a series of thick connections to the Jewish community and the Jewish people in North America and Israel. Our madrichim will also model for our Fellows a committed, thoughtful and engaged relationship with the State of Israel as a Jewish and Democratic state. They facilitate participant reflection on the educational content and work to cultivate a community of learners. Madrichim also serve as role models for ongoing engagement with Jewish ideas, Jewish life and Israel. 

We are looking for madrichim who are:  

  • Committed to embodying and advancing the values and goals of the Hartman Institute: to strengthen Jewish peoplehood, identity, and pluralism; to enhance the Jewish and democratic character of Israel; and to ensure that Judaism is a compelling force for good in the 21st century. (past participation not required)  

  • Committed to serve as role models for ongoing engagement with Jewish ideas, Jewish life and Israel.  

  • Committed to model for our Fellows a committed, thoughtful and engaged relationship with the State of Israel. 

  • Committed to the thriving future of the Jewish people in North America, in Israel and globally  

  • Committed to ongoing leadership within the Jewish community   

  • Experienced working with Jewish teen learners  

  • Comfortable with online learning tools (Zoom, Excel, WhatsApp) 

 

Madrichim Core Responsibilities:  

  • Mentoring a participant cohort/shevet 

  • Serve as role model for teen’s ongoing engagement with the Jewish people in Israel and globally, Jewish living and learning. 


  • Support a shevet (small group of Fellows) that learns together and from one another 


  • Facilitate shevet processing and debrief sessions during the Shabbatonim and virtual shevet gatherings, focusing on cognitive and affective engagement with Jewish living, peoplehood, and the State of Israel. 


  • Support Fellows throughout the Fellowship and guide them towards ongoing Jewish learning and engagement


  • Program Attendance 


  • Attend both weekend Shabbatonim (Fall/Spring) and all sessions during the program (in person) 


  • One virtual elective class each Trimester


  • Participate in Fellowship regional gatherings, beit midrash, and orientations, as appropriate


  • Internship learning gatherings in Fall/Winter 


  • Virtual learning 

  • Serve as a Teaching Assistant for one elective class each trimester including introducing speakers, managing Zoom chat and breakout rooms, sharing digital resources, managing communication with students.  

  • Troubleshooting technology challenges for participants 

  • Maintaining attendance records during electives 

 

  • Program Planning 

  • Help design shabbat, social, and informal activities for the shabbatonim, as needed 

  • Participate in programs, panel discussions, as appropriate 

 

  • Training Sessions 

  • Introduction to the Teen Fellowship Program and Role 

  • Creating Safe Communities: Anti-Harassment and Safe Boundaries (all staff) 

  • Facilitator and Processing, training 

  • Pre-program agenda reviews (before shabbatonim and virtual beit midrash) 

  • Introductions and informal meetings with elective teacher, as needed 

  • Trainings: Dates TBD 

 Salary:  $5,000
